OK, so I just finished playing Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days on the Nintendo DS. First of all OH MY GOD, SADDEST ENDING EVAR! EVARRRRR!!! Second of all, after nearly every mission you complete, Roxas, Axel, and Ms. Mary-Sue of the day Xion go up to the clock-tower in Twilight Town and have themselves some sea salt ice-cream pops. Now, I’m a decent cook, and as any self respecting Kingdom Hearts geek, I was very curious as to what sea salt ice-cream tasted like. What better way to figure that out, than to make it myself!

sea-salt-ice-cream

Cut to about a week ago. Friend and fellow DO XIII member Mike was having his birthday celebration. Considering that he had access to liquid nitrogen (don’t ask how, but two goats, a baseball bat, and a waffle wrapped in plastic were involved) he figured, what better way to celebrate being one year closer to death than to make ice-cream using the liquid nitrogen and the overwhelming power of SCIENCE!!! All party-goers were able to pick one flavor of ice-cream they wanted to make and of course me, fresh off my cry fest from repeatedly watching the ending of 358/2 days. decoded that mine would be the favorite of Nobodies everywhere, sea salt flavor.

sea-salt-2Now liquid nitrogen based sea-salt ice-cream is the GEEKIEST ICE-CREAM YOU CAN MAKE. It uses an obscure science based ice-cream making method to make a flavor prominently featured in a video game. Awesome! Most of the recipes on the internet didn’t actually appeal to me, so instead I used my own favorite custard base and tweaked the recipe myself. The result was phenomenal. The sea salt ice-cream we made was described by Rob to be “far too awesome.” We totally understood why Roxas had this every day. Trust me, it was amazing.

Now what sort of people would we be if we didn’t share this recipe with you. Just follow these simple steps and you too will be able to make your own sea salt ice-cream, betray your friends, get trapped in a virtual reality town, and eventually cease to exist … well you will be able to at least make the ice-cream.

THE SUPER DELUXE TOTALLY AWESOME OFFICIAL DISORGANIZATION XIII SEA SALT ICE CREAM RECIPE!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

EQUIPMENT

  • Wire whisk or fork
  • Wooden spoon
  • Medium sized saucepan
  • Medium sized bowl
  • 1 cup measure
  • 1 teaspoon measure
  • Ice-cream maker or ice-pop molds or a cooler of liquid nitrogen (optional)
  • 1 heart (optional … get it)

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • sea-salt
  • blue and green food coloring (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Re-arrange the letters of your name and add an X somewhere.
  2. Crack 2 eggs into the bowl and whisk well for a few minutes. A wire whisk works best but a fork can do in a pinch.
  3. Add the cup of sugar into the eggs and continue to whisk well until creamy.
  4. Heat the milk in the saucepan over medium heat until warmish hot while constantly stirring with the wooden spoon (do not use a metal spoon it will scratch your pot and make the milk burn easier). The milk should be right before boiling, but do not let it boil. Do not heat too fast or the milk will curdle. Whole milk works best and makes the creamiest and most delicious ice cream, however any milk will do in a pinch (I actually used 2%) and if you are watching your weight feel free to use skim.
  5. Add the egg and sugar mixture into the warm milk and heat over medium to low heat until thickened. This will take a while and the mixture may boil a bit. If it does reduce your heat to low (to prevent further boiling) and keep stirring until it has the consistency of very thin pudding. If you want a slightly richer ice cream, add a couple more sprinklings of sugar to this step.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stick it in the fridge to cool.
  7. Once your mixture has cooled to room temperature or below, take it out of the fridge and add the heavy cream and vanilla. People who want a slightly richer ice-cream may want to add a little more vanilla than usual.
  8. Add sea-salt slowly and taste until you have a slightly salty but sweet flavor to your liking. I like my sea-salt ice cream very salty and put a little under a teaspoon of salt in. Some people like less, some people like more.
  9. (Optional) Add the food coloring. To get the traditional kingdom hearts color, I used 10 drops of blue and 2 drops of green.

This is your ice cream, except the only problem is, it’s not iced yet. To get it nice and cold and frosty you will use one of four methods.

THE ICE POP METHOD

This is the simplest method, and it results in sea salt ice cream pops much like you see in Kingdom Hearts 2 and 358/2 days. Simply pour your mixture into your ice-pop molds and put the molds into your freezer. When they are fully frozen you will have ice cold sea salt ice cream pops ready to be taken to your nearest clock tower.

THE ICE CREAM MAKER METHOD

This method results in hard ice-cream much the consistency of what you would find in a local Edy’s tub. Simply turn the ice cream maker on and pour your concoction in and let it run from 1-2 hours. You will have to wait longer than normal for sea salt ice-cream to freeze because the salt lowers the freezing temperature. After it has thickened, place it in a storage container and put it in the freezer to freeze.

THE LIQUID NITROGEN METHOD

This method is possibly dangerous and we don’t recommend it to anyone who doesn’t have experience dealing with liquid nitrogen, supervision, and a friend to help. Basically, pour the liquid nitrogen directly into your ice cream mixture very slowly bit by bit while stirring constantly. Your ice cream will thicken gradually as the liquid nitrogen burns off. Do NOT let the liquid nitrogen come in contact with skin or get on any hair or cloth or carpet. Any liquid nitrogen that gets caught in a skin crevice or hair or something could cause third degree burns. Handle it with the same caution you would use when dealing with hot boiling oil in a fryer. However, if you succeed you will have the creamiest soft serve ice cream you will have ever tasted.

THE GHETTO FABULOUS WAY

If you have none of these other options available to you, simply put the mixture in a container and stick it in the freezer. This basically creates a brick of ice cream, way harder than any of the other methods, but it still tastes good and you can scrape it out and put it in a bowl all the same.

sea salt 3

There! Now you have all you need to go and make your own sea salt ice-cream. Make a batch right away and share it with your friends … except for Demyx … Demyx is a tool.

  1. Sweet then Salty or Salty then Sweet actually has nothing to do with the ingredients. Small bit of science here, the order in which you taste the flavors actually has to do with your particular taste-buds. Depending on whether your salty or sweet taste buds are stronger, you will pick up one before the other. Either way, Sweet then Salty is how I taste it.

  2. Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh thanks man ………………………………………………………………………anyway how did u find out the recipe to the ice cream?

  3. One more thing, which is your favorite keyblade, favorite organization XIII member and why, and also your favorite kingdom hearts game?

  4. Wow, that’s a lot of questions.

Well lets see, I’ll answer them in order.

    1. The recipe is a slightly altered vanilla ice cream recipe of my own design. The original vanilla custard recipe was out of a book that came with an ice-cream maker I got by default after helping one of my friends move. I altered the recipe slightly to be more sweet and integrated it with a vanilla ice-cream recipe I liked. Then I did some research into sea-salt ice-cream and found out that it was basically vanilla ice-cream with sea-salt in it, to varying degrees. I experimented a bit till I found a ratio I liked and bam, insta-recipe. First time I tried it was at my friend’s house with liquid nitrogen. Gotta love cooking with liquid nitrogen.

    2. Favorite keyblade? Well, I never found much to like/dislike in the way of keyblades. They are all the same generic totally flowery key designs. I generally favor the ones with the best stat increases and as such I always favored the oathkeeper+oblivion combo, or the big ass key (forget the name but it was given to you by cloud) and ultima weapon.

    3. Favorite Organization XIII member? Well at this point I have to, for legal reasons, say that Disorganization XIII is not affiliated with Square-Enix, nor is our title in any way derived from Organization XIII. That being said, Roxas obv. There was so much about his character that they simply didn’t go into, and so much more they CAN do. Honestly, my favorite scenario is that Sora somehow goes heartless again (anti-form would be great foreshadowing) and Roxas has to step in and be the hero of KH3. But thats very fanfictiony.

    4. Favorite KH game? Well KH 2 is an easy default, but honestly I liked 358/2 days. I nearly cried at the end of that.

  5. To me my favorite keyblade is way to dawn
Favorite organization member is xigbar because he teleports and shoots and because he has that cool big scar on his face and a cool eyepatch
Favorite KH game would be re:chain of memories

p.s the “big ass” keyblade you forgot the name of is called Fenrir |)

  6. p.s.s. ur a geniuness

  7. Thank you so much for this recipe!! Me and my friend used it today to make the icecream. We are just about to freeze it, and its the perfect color! It must have taken you quite a while to get that right! :)

  8. lol i’ll be able to make it sometime :D Xann Nxan Naxn Nanx Nnax? i like Naxn,Nanx,Nnax the best though :3 yet i’ll be cosplaying as roxas in my second batch sometime.

  9. thanks for the recipe! Me and my friends shared it together and it was great!

p.s. Axel is the best nobody EVAH!

  10. Meh, I fail at mixing up my name!! My actual name is Krynson (Like Crimson only the m is a n) but we shorten that to Kryn. Though all my anime friends call me Kia…yes like the car. Any ideas?!?!

  11. Wow, your name is hard. Uhm… uhmmmmmm uhhhhhh UHHHHHHH

    Think think think…

Well the best sounding one so far would be Kixa… its lame and easy but it sounds like Key-Sha… and thats badass.

  12. Love the recipe i’m making it now, can’t wait to see how it turns out :D
i can’t think for the life of me an anagram for my name, the only one is Demix but i’m a girl and it’s near identical to Demyx XD

  13. thank you so much ^^ i made it like halfed just in case i didnt like it but i loved it! I went camping and ugh it was like torture not to be able to make it ^^ thank you for shareing it with us!

  14. omg teh ice cream is awesome and i felt special and all kingdom heartsy making it, good recipe. yea i fail so much i actually played “Sanctuary” in the background while i made the ice cream but oh well. And i cannot think of a cool name ehhh….. my names Travis and so far all i came up with was Trix…but then i feel like cereal..

  15. Travis, you should change your name to Vixstar. I picture a glam rock haircut. And a guitar. No wait, all the nobodies pretty much have that :)

  16. I’ve tried this recipe, and it’s freezing now, but I think I messed up the proportions on the first step or something. Tiffany is just an icky name to try and add an x to. I’m really excited to try the ice cream though.

  17. This recipie looks really good. :3 I’m going to have to try it once I get the chance. I couldn’t come up with anything better for my name, as the girl above me said, Tiffany is a hard name to put an X in. xD

  18. its easy to mess up early on, that’s pretty much the hardest part, outside of not cooking the egg.

  19. This ice cream is amazing! I made it last night and I’m gonna make it again tonight. :)

The issue is, my dad says it’s too salty, my sister says it’s really really sweet, and I think it’s perfect. o.e

Anywho, I can’t really think of my name fitting in very well with the Org.

    Xemnag…Mezgna…Zegnam…Dx

  20. P.S., how is Demyx a tool? I love him. Dx But Axel and Saix are my favorites.

  21. How about Gemnax?

  22. What kind of milk did you use? 2%?

  23. HELP. me and a few friends made it, it came out disgustingly eggy, did we cook it for too long? smells like scrambled eggs.

  24. Travis: I have a friend by the same name that we all call “Stravix,” though I do like “Vixstar” an awful lot too… So many possibilities. Unlike me, considering Hannah only has three letters in it. -_-
But thank you SO MUCH for sharing this recipe with us!! My long-time Kingdom Hearts buddy’s getting his wisdom teeth out next week, so I’m going to try to bring him some of this. <3

  25. You cooked it FAR too fast. Lower the heat, possibly add more sugar.

  26. Yep 2% though I recommend whole.

  27. thanks! I can’t wait to try it! I’ll probably be eating it everyday. LOL.
hmm…. for my name? I go by Val, soo I’m thinking of vaxl? LOL like vax-l.
I guess somthing close to Axel? haha.
    but thanks.

  28. wait… heavy cream goes for whip cream right?
    like CoolWhip?

  29. no don’t use cool whip

use actual heavy cream. From the dairy isle.

  30. Ooh. Okay thanks.
But how does it look like?

  31. Okay thanks.
But how does it look like?

  32. @Vaxl, it comes in cartons usually, somewhere inbetween the mil and the butter, usually new the coffee mate and the canned whip cream

  33. omg totally awsome! im dressing as axel for halloween and im going to downtown spokane possibly. anyway there is a clock tower downtown…ill try to convince my friends to dress up as xion and roxas

  34. @ Tixob : ooh! thanks! I think I got the right one then. :)

  35. CCCCCCCCCCCCCCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL i have to try this my Nobody name is Laxgrie took 4 eva to figure out i hop it turns out ok

  36. A piece of advice for everyone having trouble with the first step. The ice cream works OK with out any cooking so cook it on the lowest possible setting of your stove. If you have a thermometer your goal is to heat the mixture to ~170F NOT BOILING. If you are uncertain and have good eggs you can ship the cooking and move directly to the application of cold.

If you can get it and know what you are doing I highly recommend making ice cream with Liquid Nitrogen because it is incredibly easy, extremely fast, and gives you a chance to fix mistakes if say you need to add more flavor. you can just melt the ice cream as start over.

If you do not know what you are doing find some one who does and bribe them with ice cream to help you.
    This will almost always work.

    -Mike the Lunatic Scholar

  37. okay so me and my friend made this ice cream and well…i think it didnt freeze properly cause it was way too soft it wouldnt evan stay on the popsickle stick. what did we do wrong or is that how its supposed to be?

  38. Thanks for the recipe.
    My Nobody name is Xemitan

  39. @zara how long did you freeze it for?
    this could be caused by
    1. simply not freezing it long enough for the ice cream to completely solidify

    2. you freezer not being set to a cold enough setting to counteract the anti-freeze like properties of the salt, sugar and other ingredients.

    3. gremlins

To counteract 1 and 2 lower the temperature setting in you freezer and wait overnight for maximal hardness

To stop gremlins is significantly more difficult. Sometimes simply trying again can help.

    -Mike the Lunatic Scholar

  40. I loved how it came out. I’ve tried several sea-salt ice cream recipes and they all tasted horrid. So I love it!

    @zara and mike
To get rid of gremlins treaten them with a cat. They hate cats for some reason. Maybe it’s because cats will eat them. Who knows. *shrugs*

-Thaxson the Slightly Deranged Alchemist (a.k.a. Talcen of dA)
